New Years Eve at the Wolf!!!

Once a year we say goodbye to the past year and Welcome the next, and on Thursday, December 31st Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk and Papa Gros Funk will bring in the New Year!

Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, which started as a side project in 2003 has become regarded as the future of New Orleans funk. With a direct lineage to The Meters and The Neville Brothers, combined with members who have shared the stage with Dave Matthews, Trey Anastasio, Etta James and Harry Connick Jr. (just to name a few), Dumpstaphunk is a recipe for creating a new standard for an entire genre. Dumpstaphunk is a unique music moster which has grown from the grooves of Ivan Neville (vocals, Organ), Tony Hall (bass, guitar, vocals), Nick Daniels (bass, vocals), Ian Neville (guitar), and raymond Webber (drums, Vocals).

Also performing New Year's Eve, another of New Orleans funk favorite, Papa Grows Funk! The all-star lineup features New Orleans' finest musicians and funkiest characters, all of whom have deep roots in New Orleans music. Anchored around the slinky Hammond B3 grooves of band leader John Gros (George Porter, Jr. and Runnin' Pardners) is internationally renowned June Yamagishi (Wild Magnolias) on guitar, Marc Pero (Smilin’ Myron) on bass, Jason Mingledorff (Galactic) on saxophone and Jeffery “Jellybean” Alexander (Jon Cleary).

Whether you're
an optimist that wants to stay up until midnight to see the New Year in or a pessimist that wants to make sure the old year leaves, come down to The Howlin' Wolf to phunk it out!

Frontier: The Ultimate Journey Tribute

To say that you don't like Journey is damn near un-American. Even if you don't like all of their songs you have to admit that "Don't Stop Believing" is a guilty pleasure, and everyone has slow danced to "Open Arms" or "Faithfully" at a school dance.

Fan or not, the folks at the Howlin Wolf have got a treat for you.

Frontier, the number one Journey tribute band will rockin' New Orleans on November 21. To say that they are a cover band is an understatement because you can close your eyes and not be able to tell the difference between Steve Perry and Jeremey Hunsicker (Frontier's front man).

Check it out for yourself

Perpetual Groove

The first time I saw Perpetual Groove live was at Bonnaroo. I had never heard them (or even heard of them) up to that point. What resulted that evening was a show that made Bonnaroo history, and has been the subject of lore ever since. The band played for SIX HOURS STRAIGHT!!! The show started at midnight and didn't stop 'til the sun was up...I mean way up! I personally did not have the stamina to hang for six hours. I remember (barely remember) dipping out at around 4, but the morning when I woke up it was all that anyone could talk about.

The band hails from Athens, Georgia and has been around since 2001. They describe their music as "Trance Arena-Rock," which is a truly unique name for their unique sound. I personally, doubt that words can describe the experience correctly...acid induced words?...maybe, but even they cannot grasp the full scope. Their light show alone is a marvel all to itself.

The band has created a massive following internationally in the Jam Band scene, and now they are bringing their sound to the Howlin' Wolf New Orleans. So come on out on Thursday, November the 12th and get ready to have your mind blown!!

Tickets for Tweets, Part Deaux...Voodoo! Winner

It was a hard fought battle, but the clear winner of the "Tickets for Tweets" contest is Mickey Hughes!!!

Just a few words about Mickey: He is better known as @eyeammickey504 on Twitter, or you can find him at http://twitter.com/eyeammickey504. His bio reads, "To hard to be soft, to tuff to be tender. No Excuses Only Results." Sounds like a nice guy...just not a snuggler...i'm guessing.

Either way, the most important thing you need to know about Mickey is that he will be enjoying a Free pass to Voodoo Fest 2009, as well as, free tickets to all three "Voodoo at Night" shows here at the Howlin Wolf!!!

Congrats to all who tried, but came short. @richard_hirsch or @richardhirch2 (depending upon Twitter suspensions) was a close second, and @nolamaven got the bronze.

We will probably do this contest again, so don't worry if you missed out this time.

Tickets for Tweets, Part Deaux...Voodoo!

A couple of weeks ago we decides that we wanted to have a contest where we traded tickets to our Dr. Dog show for Twitter followers, and the Tickets for Tweets contest was born. We gained many new followers from this, and our new friend Semmes Welmsley came away with the prize!

Now we want to do it again, but this time we have upped the stakes. This time...are you ready for it...I can hardly believe it myself....(drum roll please)....we are giving away a 3-DAY PASS TO THE VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE!!! But wait...that's not all. The winner will also receive FREE ENTRY TO ALL THREE NIGHTS OF OUR "VOODOO AT NIGHT" CONCERT SERIES!!!

Is that cool or what?

So just in case I wasn't clear enough, you get to the entire weekend of Voodoo and the entire weekend of after-festival shows at the Howlin Wolf FOR FREAKIN' FREE!! And all you have to do is get people to follow us on Twitter.

Here's how it works. You get your Twitter followers to follow us (@howlinwolfnola), and have them post the line, "I just followed @howlinwolfnola so @(yourtwitternamehere) can have a Voodoo Experience for free."

That's it.

Just remember:
1. They must be NEW followers for us.
and
2. They MUST post the quote to their status (otherwise you don't get credit).

You can see the full lineup of the Voodoo Music Experience 2009 here.

This year's Voodoo at Night lineup at the Howlin Wolf will feature:
Oct 30
Voodoo at Night presents the Rebirth Brass Band with Big Sam's Funky Nation
Oct 31

That is going to be one hell of a weekend!!!

The contest starts.....NOW, and will end at Midnight on Wednesday, October 28. We will announce the winner at noon on the 29th!!!!

For any of you Twitter Noobs who aren't to clear on how this works, you can email me (Matt) at bodie.matt@gmail.com for more info.

Good luck and GET TO TWEETIN'!!!

SOJA: Soldiers of Jah Army

The saga of SOJA is the kind that you like to hear as a fan of their Genre. Some of the members of the band have known each other since grade school. All of the band has collectively sought to discover the deeper roots in music, which is often missed in the mainstream. A quote from the band's website from the lead singer Jacob states, “We loved rock and hip hop, but there was something missing in the message. Even with our favorite artists, you would get one song that hit home and touched you, then three that were about nothing. With our favorite artists in the reggae genre, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, they were singing about something beautiful that truly mattered in every song. We never really got over it.”

Aspiring to discover "something beautiful" in their own music has united the band for many years. They have gone further to try to tell the American story using the Jamaican art form. By staying true to this mission the band has had seven releases, mostly on their own label. The band describes their most recent album "Born in Babylon" as the album that they have been wanting to release for ten years.

The Howlin Wolf is very excited to have SOJA perform Saturday October 17. They will be supported by
The Movement , The Live Oaks and 27 Lights. It will surely be a great show.

Derek Tabb: Hero

Derek Tabb is so much more than just the Drummer for the Rebirth Brass Band. He is a local hero. Growing up in New Orleans taught Derek many valuable lessons as to music's power to keep kids out of the streets and away from the drug dealers. He is a living testimony to that. However, Derek has gone a step further to give back to the art form that just might of saved his life. He worked to form "The Roots of Music Foundation." It is best described by the foundation's website:
"The Roots of Music program is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded by Rebirth Brass band drummer, Derrick Tabb, Allison Reinhardt, and Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews. Having seen and experienced the losses of Hurricane Katrina and the daily challenges facing New Orleans' inner-city youths, they were concerned the youth and the music culture of New Orleans were in jeopardy of being lost. From this concern grew the idea and ultimately the formation of The Roots of Music as a free, after-school academic tutoring AND music education program for low-income middle-school students in New Orleans."

The television network CNN has recognized Derek's achievements, and has chosen to nominate him as 2009's Hero of the Year. This is a wonderful honor to a great man, and we here at the Howlin Wolf would greatly appreciate your taking a moment to go to CNN's website and vote for Derek. We as New Orleanians need to he supporting every hero we have!!

The voting page can be found here.

The link to the article about Derek and the Roots of Music Foundation can be found here.

Here's Derek's Video:

Please take the time to do this. Derek deserves this honor!!!

Strung Out

Monday October 5th the doors of the Howlin Wolf will all have to be open as wide as they can be, because if they are not they will be blown clear off once the full audio assault of Strung Out is unleashed.

For those of you who are not familiar with this band's face-melting blend of punk-metal, Strung Out hails from Simi Valley California and have been on the scene since '92. They have 7 releases on Fat Wreck Records. Their music has become an anthem for the skater scene of late, and they are a regular part of the Vans Warped Tour.

So you must bring yourself to The Howlin Wolf New Orleans on Monday October 5th! The show will also feature Toronto's own The Flatliners, and New Orleans locals Alias Orion.

The Knux

We here at the Wolf love a good New Orleans artist success story, and The Knux are just that. The two brothers Kentrell "Krispy Kream" and Alvin "Rah Almillio" Lindsey came up through the New Orleans hip hop scene like so many others, and they only managed to record a demo before the tragedy of Katrina force them to escape to Houston.

Katrina, however, turned out to be a blessing in disguise because while they were evacuated their demo managed to make it into the hands of an influential A&R rep Dart Parker. Shortly thereafter the brothers were on their way to Hollywood to begin production of their first album. Being in Hollywood got them the attention that they deserved, and also got a song featured on the show Entourage and the movie Harold and Kumar Go To Guantanamo.

Now with an awesome CD in hand, and a reputation for putting on killer shows, the Knux are coming back to New Orleans as hometown heroes for a night at The Howlin Wolf New Orleans.

The show is on Thursday, Sept 3 and is not to be missed. So come on out and welcome home two of Nola's prodigal sons!!

Know Your Enemy: Rage Against The Machine Tribute

Rage Against The Machine stepped into the forefront of the Southern California music scene in 1991 with their unique blend of Rap, Hardcore, and revolutionary political views. They remained at the top of the "pissed-off revolutionary" music scene for many years until their breakup in 2000.

Sadly, you cannot see the real Rage, but the Howlin Wolf New Orleans has got the next best thing. Know Your Enemy, a RATM tribute band will be at the Wolf on Saturday, August 22 to regale you with all of Rage's best.

Here's a little sample of what you have in store:

SoCal Punk Invasion

1. Are you a Beatles or Elvis man?

2. Are you a fan of West Coast or East Coast Rap?

3. Southern California punk or New York punk?

Most people have answers for the first two questions, but to have an answer for the third shows a depth of knowledge about popular culture and music that most cannot muster. Either way, the emergence of the punk scene in any city caused a major upset to the status quo. It's something that I love to talk about, and if you need more info on the subject I can suggest all kinds media surrounding the topic (seriously, email me at bodie.matt@gmail.com, I WILL talk your ear off on this).

Otherwise I would suggest showing up to Howlin Wolf on Wednesday, August 12 and see a virtual cross section of the entire Southern California punk movement from its founders to current scene leaders.

The highlight of the evening, of course, will be one of the scene's founding members (and probably its rudest) Fear. This band loved to piss people off. If a show went on from start to finish without inciting a riot.... well, it sucked. The band's founder (and the only original member in its current lineup) Lee Ving would taunt and tease the crowd at every opportunity. Most shows, it's amazing that they escaped with thier lives.

If you don't believe me, see for yourself:

This is something you cannot miss!!!! Best be here on Wednesday or they will come and find you!!!

Jeff Buckley Tribute Night

Jeff Buckley was an artist who left us way too soon. We did not get to have enough of his beautiful voice in our lives before he died tragically while wading in the Mississippi River. To imagine what future releases from this brilliant artist would have been like is heartbreaking. The songs that he did bestow upon us before his demise represent some of the most dynamic and heartfelt music of that time.

Here's one of my favorites off of his 1994 release "Grace."

Mojo Pin - Jeff Buckley

And another of my favorites, "So Real." Just amazing!!!

So Real - Jeff Buckley

Such a versatile artists would have, without a doubt, had a long and illustrious career. The music world is worse off for not having seen his full potential come to fruition.

That being said, please come to the Howlin Wolf on Saturday, August 8 and help us celebrate the life of Jeff Buckley. Jeff's mother will be there for a Q&A, there will be a screening of the Buckley biopic "Grace Around the World," and there will be performances by For Karma and an artist TBA.

Tickets can be purchased from The Howlin Wolf Site.

Afrika Bambaataa and The Red Bull Academy

The big news this week around the
Howlin Wolf is the arrival of Afrika Bambaataa. Now, with most Howlin Wolf blog posts I would give some biographical info on the artist and show some videos ect, ect. Afrika needs no intro except to say that if you don't know, you need to find out. To say that you are a fan of Hip Hop and not know Afrika Bambaataa is like building a house without a foundation. He IS the Godfather of Hip Hop, and one of the most important figures in music from our (or at least my) generation.

And yes he will be at The
Howlin Wolf New Orleans on Monday, July 13 with DJ KMT plus DJ Soul Sister and Truth Universal. More info and tickets here.

However, the thing that drew my attention while reading about this event was the people who are the sponsors. The Red Bull Music Academy was something that I had never heard of before. At first I thought, "Yeah, just another brand with a record label and a
phony cause," but upon further investigation I discovered that this is a dream come true for young musicians.

Here's how it works:
Red Bull selects musicians out of a pool of applicants and takes them to a musical epicenter (next year's will be in London) for two weeks of
collaboration and classes with some of the biggest names in the industry.

Here's how they describe it on their website:
"The Red Bull Music Academy is an event that travels the world. A yearly celebration of all the journeys and breakthroughs, all the dreams and intricacies that go into the music we love. For two weeks, you'll be checking gear, chatting on tunes, and spinning in clubs, while getting a rare glimpse into local musical hybrids in a different country. In between times, you can talk to people from around the world who started revolutions in sound. They're the people we look up to, and they're looking to you for a fresh perspective in turn."

What's even more impressive is that
over the past 10 years, this event has hosted iconic musicians and music industrians like Bob Moog, Sly & Robbie, Tony Allen, and Chuck D. Now the Academy can add, The Godfather himself, Afrika Bambaataa to this amazing roster.

So if you are a musician....what are you waiting for!!!! The Academy is accepting applications until July 27, and you can find all the info you need to know here.

And of course I can't leave without posting some video to get you jazzed about the show:

DMC DJ Competition

The DMC DJ competition began in London in 1985. Since then it has enjoyed an amazingly consistent popularity among fans of electronic and hip hop music. DMC has been instrumental in bringing out the best in these genres of music, both in its musical style and performance quality. Past DMC DJ competitions are looked upon as iconic moments where DJs have made their careers revealing new techniques and sounds. Just a quick look at the "World Championship DJ History" page is enough to prove that this event is where DJs bust out all the new stuff!!

The Howlin Wolf New Orleans is certain that this will be the case when we host the New Orleans leg of the DMC DJ competition on Friday July 10. The competition begins at 10pm.

Here's a few moments from past DMC events:

A Very Funny Night!!

It's nice when we here at the Howlin Wolf can take a break from music and just be funny. Well this Wednesday we are going to do just that. Dave Russo will be taking the stage to bust your gut with friends Wild Bill Dykes, Howard Hall, and Skip Guidry.

In case you are unfamiliar with Dave here's a blurb from his site:
"After winning the inaugural Boston Int'l Comedy Festival "Best New Comic award", Dave received national attention when he beat out 5,000 entertainers to be a part the E! Entertainment Networks 10 episode TV series "The Entertainer". Dave was recently hand selected by the producer of NBC's Last Comic Standing to perform on the new TV show NESN's COMEDY ALL-STARS and is on the cover and prominently featured in "THE COMEDIANS" Americas Comedy Magazine!"

If that doesn't convince you, here's a couple of videos from Dave and the other performers that will be taking the stage Wednesday, July 8. For more info on the show, check out the Howlin Wolf New Orleans Website and click on the tickets link.
