Tickets for Tweets, Part Deaux...Voodoo! Winner

It was a hard fought battle, but the clear winner of the "Tickets for Tweets" contest is Mickey Hughes!!!

Just a few words about Mickey: He is better known as @eyeammickey504 on Twitter, or you can find him at http://twitter.com/eyeammickey504. His bio reads, "To hard to be soft, to tuff to be tender. No Excuses Only Results." Sounds like a nice guy...just not a snuggler...i'm guessing.

Either way, the most important thing you need to know about Mickey is that he will be enjoying a Free pass to Voodoo Fest 2009, as well as, free tickets to all three "Voodoo at Night" shows here at the Howlin Wolf!!!

Congrats to all who tried, but came short. @richard_hirsch or @richardhirch2 (depending upon Twitter suspensions) was a close second, and @nolamaven got the bronze.

We will probably do this contest again, so don't worry if you missed out this time.

Tickets for Tweets, Part Deaux...Voodoo!

A couple of weeks ago we decides that we wanted to have a contest where we traded tickets to our Dr. Dog show for Twitter followers, and the Tickets for Tweets contest was born. We gained many new followers from this, and our new friend Semmes Welmsley came away with the prize!

Now we want to do it again, but this time we have upped the stakes. This time...are you ready for it...I can hardly believe it myself....(drum roll please)....we are giving away a 3-DAY PASS TO THE VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE!!! But wait...that's not all. The winner will also receive FREE ENTRY TO ALL THREE NIGHTS OF OUR "VOODOO AT NIGHT" CONCERT SERIES!!!

Is that cool or what?

So just in case I wasn't clear enough, you get to the entire weekend of Voodoo and the entire weekend of after-festival shows at the Howlin Wolf FOR FREAKIN' FREE!! And all you have to do is get people to follow us on Twitter.

Here's how it works. You get your Twitter followers to follow us (@howlinwolfnola), and have them post the line, "I just followed @howlinwolfnola so @(yourtwitternamehere) can have a Voodoo Experience for free."

That's it.

Just remember:
1. They must be NEW followers for us.
and
2. They MUST post the quote to their status (otherwise you don't get credit).

You can see the full lineup of the Voodoo Music Experience 2009 here.

This year's Voodoo at Night lineup at the Howlin Wolf will feature:
Oct 30
Voodoo at Night presents the Rebirth Brass Band with Big Sam's Funky Nation
Oct 31
Voodoo at Night presents Krewe of M.O.M.'s Halloween Ball with Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk with Johnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes plus Derrick Freeman's Smokers World
Nov 1
Voodoo at Night presents "Down on the Bayou" a benefit for the New Orleans Musicians Clinic featuring John "JoJo" Hermann, Ivan Neville, George Porter Jr., Russell Batiste, Alfred "Uganda" Roberts and Ian Neville

That is going to be one hell of a weekend!!!

The contest starts.....NOW, and will end at Midnight on Wednesday, October 28. We will announce the winner at noon on the 29th!!!!

For any of you Twitter Noobs who aren't to clear on how this works, you can email me (Matt) at bodie.matt@gmail.com for more info.

Good luck and GET TO TWEETIN'!!!

SOJA: Soldiers of Jah Army

The saga of SOJA is the kind that you like to hear as a fan of their Genre. Some of the members of the band have known each other since grade school. All of the band has collectively sought to discover the deeper roots in music, which is often missed in the mainstream. A quote from the band's website from the lead singer Jacob states, “We loved rock and hip hop, but there was something missing in the message. Even with our favorite artists, you would get one song that hit home and touched you, then three that were about nothing. With our favorite artists in the reggae genre, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, they were singing about something beautiful that truly mattered in every song. We never really got over it.”

Aspiring to discover "something beautiful" in their own music has united the band for many years. They have gone further to try to tell the American story using the Jamaican art form. By staying true to this mission the band has had seven releases, mostly on their own label. The band describes their most recent album "Born in Babylon" as the album that they have been wanting to release for ten years.

The Howlin Wolf is very excited to have SOJA perform Saturday October 17. They will be supported by
The Movement , The Live Oaks and 27 Lights. It will surely be a great show.

Derek Tabb: Hero

Derek Tabb is so much more than just the Drummer for the Rebirth Brass Band. He is a local hero. Growing up in New Orleans taught Derek many valuable lessons as to music's power to keep kids out of the streets and away from the drug dealers. He is a living testimony to that. However, Derek has gone a step further to give back to the art form that just might of saved his life. He worked to form "The Roots of Music Foundation." It is best described by the foundation's website:
"The Roots of Music program is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded by Rebirth Brass band drummer, Derrick Tabb, Allison Reinhardt, and Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews. Having seen and experienced the losses of Hurricane Katrina and the daily challenges facing New Orleans' inner-city youths, they were concerned the youth and the music culture of New Orleans were in jeopardy of being lost. From this concern grew the idea and ultimately the formation of The Roots of Music as a free, after-school academic tutoring AND music education program for low-income middle-school students in New Orleans."

The television network CNN has recognized Derek's achievements, and has chosen to nominate him as 2009's Hero of the Year. This is a wonderful honor to a great man, and we here at the Howlin Wolf would greatly appreciate your taking a moment to go to CNN's website and vote for Derek. We as New Orleanians need to he supporting every hero we have!!

The voting page can be found here.

The link to the article about Derek and the Roots of Music Foundation can be found here.

Here's Derek's Video:

Please take the time to do this. Derek deserves this honor!!!
